From a Mother’s Need to Global Innovation: The Story Behind The Smart Bunker™

Innovation often begins at home—and sometimes, it starts with a mother.
For Niall Greenan, founder of Greenans Products Limited, the inspiration for his groundbreaking product came from something deeply personal: watching his mother struggle. Living with arthritis, she found it increasingly difficult to lift heavy coal buckets or scoop from a traditional coal bunker. The coal was either too heavy to access when full or too scattered when nearly empty.
Determined to find a better way, Niall studied the ergonomics of coal storage and began experimenting with designs. The “lightbulb moment” came—quite literally—from a lampshade. In a stroke of genius, he inverted the lampshade, combined it with a road cone and spring-loaded mechanism, and created a frame that could dispense coal easily, without the need for a shovel.
This humble prototype evolved into The Smart Bunker™, a spring-loaded storage and dispensing system that allows users to release material from the bottom of the bunker into a bucket placed underneath. It requires minimal effort—just a simple pull of a handle.
What started as a simple act of care for his mother has grown into an award-winning, multifunctional storage solution used for:
